Siddharth Photographix
Harry and Laxman have been my partners in crime since the 1990s, and they provide the craft to my art. Often found agonizing about the temperature of a color-developer at their basement studio in Bhogal (a fascinating, chaotic residential and commercial area in South Delhi), they can be found sipping wine with equal aplomb at photography show openings. This likeable duo from Bhogal call themselves Siddharth Photografix, and are recognized as one of the finest photo making studio’s in Delhi.
Harry and Laxman
Well known for their film darkroom and lab, they are one of the few remaining exponents of this dying art. In the finest tradition of film processing, they almost always enhance the essence of my photographic images. They react well to the photographer’s sensibilities, the picture moment, and always have the urge to deliver a stunning output.
At their basement outfit, an average day is set in motion by roughing it out in the developing tank. The process is meticulous and deeply engrossing in its course of development. In their words “The initial task is getting the right colors with the aid of an alkaline developer. By choosing the right film developer, you can control the overall look and feel of your final print, long before you actually start printing. The developer is then replaced with bleach to prevent it from over-processing the picture, and the image is processed using a JOBO – CPL2 unit. To make the image permanent and viewable in natural light, it’s treated with a fixer. Eventually the image is washed and cleaned thoroughly to make it stain proof and to avoid spotting. The final step is to place clips on both ends of the film, detach it from the reel and hang it dry. Finally, the photograph appears magically on a sheet of paper, and it is then enlarged with the aid of a Keizer and LPL enlarger.”
Over the course of the last decade, they have significantly expanded their digital capabilities, which in fact is their commercial mainstay today. I am thankful that they maintain a dogged commitment to their darkroom. Please frequent them commercially, as this will ensure they keep the art of the darkroom alive.
